our story

Bear's Treasure is a family-run business.
Bear’s Treasure began as a small beekeeping hobby in the year 2000, driven by a passion for nature and a deep appreciation for the role of bees in our environment. Over the years, that passion transformed into a thriving family-run business, providing pure, high-quality honey to our community. Today, Bear’s Treasure is a trusted local source of honey, known for its exceptional taste and commitment to excellent beekeeping practices.
Our bee yards are located on farms and orchards across Brant, Haldimand, Norfolk, and Oxford counties, allowing our bees to forage on a diverse range of wildflowers, fruit blossoms, and crops. This variety of nectar sources gives each honey jar its rich, complex flavour. Every drop of Bear’s Treasure honey captures the essence of the changing seasons, from spring’s delicate floral notes to the bold, golden richness of late summer blooms.
But our bees do more than make honey. They play a vital role in supporting local agriculture. As they travel from flower to flower, our bees pollinate various fruits, vegetables, and crops, helping farmers produce the fresh, flavorful food that fills our markets and kitchens. Whether it’s apples, strawberries, pumpkins, or cucumbers, our hardworking bees contribute to the cycle that brings these essential foods from bloom to your plate.
At Bear’s Treasure, we take pride in caring for our bees and ensuring they thrive in a healthy environment. Our dedication to ethical beekeeping means we harvest honey, always leaving plenty for our colonies to flourish. From hive to jar, our honey remains pure and free of additives, just as nature intended.
Whether drizzled over warm toast, stirred into tea, or enjoyed straight off the spoon,
Bear’s Treasure honey is a taste of nature’s finest work, lovingly crafted by our bees and brought to you with care.
Why the name "Bear's Treasure"? Bears are drawn to honey and bee brood, and if given the chance, they'd raid an entire hive. So, a beehive and its honey truly become a
Bear's Treasure.

meet the beekeeper

Dirk Schaap
Dirk Schaap started beekeeping in 2000 with four nucs, never expecting to manage over 500 hives today. Though honey was his original focus, pollination now drives his business, supplying hives to Norfolk County growers. He’s expanded through trust-based relationships and efficiency, using smart hive management and equipment like an EZ Loader and a honey extractor. Despite the scale, he still enjoys working with bees and constantly learning.
“The only thing we can do is keep plugging away at it.”
